Darkness - Spirit of the Frontier

The Darkness Archetype

Darkness - the element of the frontier

The Darkness Archetype is led by the Spirit of the Frontier. Despite what others might think, it is an element of Order. Of all the archetypes, this is the one that most people misunderstand. Where Darkness conjures fear and evil, its most pure manifestation is that of love and dreams.

Those who fall within this archetype can feel lost if they only compare themselves to those around them. They may seem at conflict with everyone else, but really you’re the glue that holds everyone together.

Much like the Light Archetype, there is a primal energy related to Darkness. It is a pattern or vividness, aliveness. It is deeply sensitive to physical world and all its splendor. Those who fall within this archetype feel a deep connection with the world and people around them. This means they are filled with love and the dreams of what could be. But it also means they can be hurt very deeply and take it very personally how divided the world is.

But much like darkness tends to fill any space that lacks Light, so too, do those within this archetype tend to not have any boundaries with those who also have none. They want to feel everything, both joy and pain. But just as the world needs light to flourish, so too do those who fall within this archetype need to have boundaries to flourish as well.

This might mean those who fall within this archetype feel isolated and cut off from others, not realizing how essential you are. You are the glue that holds people together. Do not be afraid of your deepness. Don’t let others shame you for your sensitivity.

Think of darkness. It fills, is ever present, and is willing to explore the suppressed parts of our minds and world. Be proud of your darkness, because there is nothing bad in it. Darkness is where dreams come from, where ideas and love form from nothingness.

It’s time to rehabilitate darkness and you have the power to do so. Accessing the darkness archetype gives you a sense of meaning, and ironically, will allow you to be a light in others’ eyes. The world represses its darkness, to its detriment. When we do, we dull our senses, surrender our lives, and allow the monotonies of the world to swallow up all feelings of joy. Darkness snaps us out of our delirium and stops us from denying our desire for adventure and vibrance.

A note about your archetype’s title. These are fluid. If a title doesn’t feel quite right, feel free to find synonyms that capture the essence of this combination of archetypes. The Warrior Poet can easily be The Dreaming Knight. The Selfless Visionary can just as easily be The Generous Dreamer. Experiment until you find the right combination.
